9th December - Great to visit the Grantham Foodbank yesterday and present a cheque for £500 on behalf of the club. Monies realised were as a result of the annual bonfire and firework display organised by the club and held last month. Thoughts are with all those who maybe less fortunate than ourselves and find themselves in need of help -whatever the circumstances.

17th December - Immediate Past President Lion Phil Salathiel was able to visit Belvoir High School Bottesford during a basic first aid training session organised by St John Ambulance (SJA) and delivered by Darren Allcock, Schools and Community trainer(see below). The funding of the training had been possible from a donation made by the Vale of Belvoir Lions club to the SJA earlier in the year.
Over 100 students received tuition during the four sessions held which included how to undertake a “Primary Survey” and determine if someone has any injuries or conditions which were life-threatening. This was by using the letters DR. ABC to remember the steps: Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Circulation.
Other training included learning how to place a casualty in the “Recovery position” and also the types of questions they would likely be asked when dialing 999 for help. Finally, they were instructed on the appropriate telephone number to call if assistance was required whilst they were visiting/staying in another European country. (112)
The club are enormously proud that we have been able to support the school. In doing so, we are able to equip students with the skills and confidence to help those who may need it - whether at school, out in the community or in future workplaces. They could be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

Between 5 and 19 December the club carried out collections with santa and his newly refurbished Sleigh with new LED lights to rival those at Blackpool.  (Acknowledgements and sincere thanks to Graham Peace and Lion Ian Redfern for their electrical expertise)  We visited villages throughout the Vale including Bingham and Bottesford.  The club members and many friends and family gave up much of their time to help with the collections.  Worthy of note was the fact that some six boys and girls aged 11 and under helped on our sleigh altogether giving over 60 hours of their time to help collect for the chosen charities. We think they'll make great Lions in the future and hope their families are proud of them too.

12 Dec 15  Santa’s clothing hanging up to dry whilst he was in the bath getting warm. To coin the lyrics of the well-known Christmas song –“Oh the weather outside was frightful…."
Despite the sterling efforts of everyone concerned this Saturday’s collection planned in central Bottesford was eventually abandoned due to very heavy rain. Those who missed out were visited the following evening by a dried out Santa with his sleigh - once again accompanied by his “merry band” of helpers.

.....and so to the Annual Boxing Day Duck Race!  That's right - the 26th December and as mild as anyone can remember.  700 plastics ducks sold on "Red & Blue" races and launched from Washdyke Bridge, Bottesford and herded towards the finish by Lions Nigel Davies and Ian Redfern.  Much support from other club members and also the Friends of St Mary's Church for providing sustenance in the guise of rolls, mince pies, hot soup and delicious mulled wine (particularly enjoyed by most of the Lions there)!  Thanks also to the Foresters Morrismen for their huge contribution in entertaining the appreciative crowds who had gathered at the Finish line.
Finally, a huge thanks to Jonathan Hammond for his very kind prize donation and the publicising of the race itself.  Yet another example of Community spirit at its best which results in support for each other.  Once again sincere appreciation to those who have supported the club and this event in particular - over £1000 raised for Childrens' charities.

Bottesford Open Gardens
A great weekend was had in the village in early July, as the residents of Bottesford opened their gardens to the public. As well as a fundraising event raining over £1100 for a number of organisations, we was visitors from as far afield as Belper and Leicester, and the gardens themselves were beautiful, at their summery best!

Bottesford Football Club Family fun day
Lions were on hand to support Bottesford Football Club's family fun day by providing the event's BBQ, which was popular with parents and players alike. The event was a great success and the Lions were pleased to be able to support such a great occasion bringing hundreds of members of the community together. The weather was kind and the BBQ did a roaring trade!

March 2015

To help celebrate LCI Centennial Service challenge, the club was presented with two bags of daffodil bulbs whilst attending this year’s District convention.  Lion Matt Burton in turn has presented them to Bottesford Preschool where it is hoped they will plant and nurture them in their garden.  This will remain a permanent reminder of the very successful association between our two organisations.

Music Quiz in aid of the Football Club
This year’s music quiz had a total of 18 teams enter with the intention of raising much needed funds towards the eventual building of a clubhouse at the Bottesford FC ground located on Nottingham (A52) Road.  Food was provided at halftime – either a homemade Chilli or lasagna provided by the efforts of members, partners and friends alike.  All in all a huge sum of £698 was raised on the night.

Bottesford Preschool
Lion Matt had the privilege and rewarding job of presenting a cheque for £500 to the Bottesford Preschool.  The monies will be put towards buying some equipment for the toddlers to learn to use. The Vale Of Belvoir Lions have started to help the Bottesford pre school with a few events, and the parents and children have returned the favour by coming out to help with Santa's sleigh and collections.

Boxing Day Duck Race

This years Duck race was held as usual on Boxing Day in Bottesford. Although cold it was very sunny and we got a big turn out with people coming down in time honoured tradition – happy to have a “blow out” after the Christmas excesses and to see friends. The river was running quite slow but despite taking about fifty minutes to complete all the ducks successfully made it to the finish. The Foresters Morris men entertained the crowd throughout and a total of £1300 was raised from individual duck sales.

Santa's Sleigh

Picture
The Vale of Belvoir Lions, family members, many many friends and people that we have supported over the past year got together for eleven nights of fun. Despite a different Santa on the sleigh on most nights there were still lots of excited children (and grown ups too!) coming out to see Santa has he toured the villages in the Vale. The people this year were most generous and our final total raised was just short of £5400. Lots of highs throughout the collection period with a visit to the WI party at the VC Hall Bottesford and the unexpected presentation by Santa of an I pad to a little girl who was just about to embark on a grueling treatment programme for cancer.

Grantham Food bank.
The current president of the Vale of Belvoir Lions Club made a visited the new premises of the Grantham Foodbank. As well as presenting the Foodbank with a cheque for £500 the visit was an opportunity to view, at first hand, the much improved facilities. In addition he was able to witness the vital and pivotal role undertaken by so many dedicated volunteers in supporting the less fortunate within the community. Lion Phil Salathiel said, “ Our club have enjoyed a long association with the Foodbank and our members have, whenever possible, tried to help and support

Bonfire.
We held our annual bonfire night on the 5th November 2014; there had been many of us there the Saturday before building the bonfire and putting a fence around it. They also spent the afternoon making the new lights we had purchased for the event. The Wednesday itself a lot of lions and friends put together the firework display and got the BBQ stall ready for action that evening. At 7pm we had to delay the starting of the firework display to allow the crowds of people trying to get in. The firework display was one of the best displays we have ever seen and the BBQ stall never stopped serving food.  A super night enjoyed by everyone with very many positive comments post event.  A total of £3500 raised

Charter celebration.
The Vale of Belvoir Lions held a 35th year celebration in recognition of when the club was first formed in 1979. We had a birthday cake and photos were shown of all our members and how they looked back in those days!  Lion President Phil made us all smile with memorable tales and events from that year.  Presentations were made Lion John and Lion Ted Evans of LCI hybrid rose, as they were both charter members. Lion John Ronan was asked to cut the cake to celebrate our 35th birthday.

October 2014

Skittles.
This has become an annual friendly skittles match and this time it was the turn of Radcliffe on Trent LC to host it. We met at The Royal Oak in East Bridgford. The Vale of Belvoir Lions played very well before the break for food with a four-nil advantage. After a lovely buffet the match was resumed with our club winning the next two games before Radcliffe on Trent avoided a whitewash by winning the last game of the evening. A great fun evening where our club retained the friendship cup until the next match to be played at the Bull, Bottesford in 2015.

September 2014

Brains of Belvoir quiz.
This fundraising event was enjoyed by many people from Bottesford and the Vale, 15 teams enjoyed a evening of general knowledge questions supplied by Lion Simon and Lion Matt who also provided much amusement and entertainment all evening.  Food, prepared by members, partners and friends, was served at the break and included a Ploughman’ supper with a pie & cream dessert.  The evening was a huge success raising money, which was swelled by a raffle and heads and tails game.  The winners of the evening were a team called the Bridgebotts. Well done to everyone a great evening   Raised £650

July 2014

Brownie Funtastic.
An approach was first made to the club from Adele Glossop , District Leader with a request to help support a planned “Funtastic weekend” (a weekend camp for local Brownies).   On a Friday evening in the pouring rain six club members with other friends erected two marquees in addition to other tentage. On the Saturday/Sunday the Brownies had a lovely weekend doing activities such as wall climbing, teddy bear making, other activities.  On Saturday three club members and one helper went to on cook over 400 sausages towards their evening meal of chips and salad.

Elderflower Festival.
The Elderflower festival, sponsored by Belvoir Fruit Farms, took place at the Knipton Cricket grounds on Sunday 13th July 2014.In previous months the club worked very closely with Darren Bicknell, Director of the Belvoir Castle Cricket Trust in an effort to support this inaugural event. Plans were drawn to provide club members to undertake car-parking duties in addition to helping with a junior cricket competition and selling tickets.  Regrettably the weather conspired against us and the event was scuppered early on with heavy rain making it miserable and hard going to start.   Following an improvement in the weather, the crowds increased and the organisers agreed it had been a viable and worthwhile event.
