Dream Making for Sick Children
On 9th February 2011, The Vale of Belvoir Lions had Maggie Falconer of When You Wish Upon A Star attending as a guest speaker.
The charity has a office in Nottingham, in the futurist house on Valley Road, also has a further two offices in Stockport and Grimsby.
Set up some 21 years ago, it's primary aim is grant wishes to children with life threatening or terminal illnesses. A very worthy cause indeed. Children are aged between 2 and 16, and can ask literally for any wish they want to come true.
Over 14,000 wishes have been granted since starting, and every year, every single wish asked for is granted! A remarkable feat for a charity.
Typical wishes include, meeting a favorite sporting hero, a laptop so children in hospital can keep in touch and use the internet, meeting a pop band or singer, toys to play with and the most popular of all a trip to Florida to meet Mickey Mouse and other disney characters. In fact one little boy's wish was to take part in the parade at Disneyland....whn you wish upon a star made this come true.
This year, the charity is raising funds to send 400 sick or ill children to lapland to see Santa and his magical kingdom. A total of 100 children per flight, each with a guardian aim to be flown to lapland later this year. Each flight costs £70,000, so the cost of sending a single child is £700.00 per seat.
