Skittles match VOB Lions v Radcliffe-on-Trent Lions Club
Venue: The Bull Inn Bottesford on 21st October 2010

Thursday 21st October 2010 heralded the much awaited Skittles match at the Bull Inn Bottesford which pitted the skills and treachery of the Vale of Belvoir (VOB) Lions club, partners and guests against the Radcliffe on Trent (ROT) Lions Club. This annual event between “mother and daughter” clubs once again demonstrated the intense but friendly rivalry made all the more special by the introduction of the “Friendship Cup” being awarded to the winning team.

VOB Lions were at the start of the match reigning champions having wrestled the title from ROT the year before. ROT clearly out for revenge but turning up a man short, threw themselves on the benevolence and good nature of the VOB team by poaching a player from them to make up even sides. The match itself was close throughout and was played down to the wire where Mark Attewell, Landlord of the Bull and Affiliate member of VOB Lions and playing the last pitch for ROT scored sufficient points to snatch the match. In the post match inquest there were several unsubstantiated threats to “black-ball” the landlord and cut off his profits at source – then it was thought better of. (Scott you know who you are!)

A really great fun night with an excellent Fish Supper courtesy of Danny’s Fish Bar and enjoyed by all. The revenge match, to be held next year, will be fought just as fiercely but perhaps VOB with a need to practice more by playing some secret games between now and then – we’ll see – or maybe we ‘black ball’ Mark after all?
